10 Good Paying Jobs for College Students

The folks over at the CollegeSpot have created a great list of part time jobs for college students to look out for if they want to make an extra buck or two. Of personal interest to me is:
" If you are a computer savvy geek knowledgeable with hardware and software, you may be able to secure a gig in your college’s computer lab or tech department. Many students, faculty, and staff will need your assistance and expertise with a variety of computer related problems. Computer and network-related set-ups, installations, and troubleshooting are typical daily duties. However, things should run smoothly for knowledgeable computer lab assistants, giving you excess time to get homework done while on the clock."
Man, if only I had the time. Anywho, hit up Collegespot for the rest of the list. Its quite useful if your looking for a part time job that has flexible hours.

Biology

It's Major of the Week time! For this week, we will be looking at Biology. While some people like myself steer clear of sciences such as biology and chemistry, the biology field is nonetheless one of opportunity and of many interesting paths (if you like that sort of thing). Hit the jump for more.

Student Loan Default Rate Rises

"Student Loan defaults edged up to 6.7 percent last year, from 5.2 percent the previous fiscal year. According to the Department of Education, 225,300 borrowers of the 3.3 million borrowers whose first loan repayments came due between Oct. 1, 2006, and Sept. 30, 2007, defaulted before Sept. 30, 2008." -New York Times
Why is it always such wonderful news?

More Years Spent Before Graduation

So this quarter has only begun, and already I seem to be lacking enough hours in the day. And it's hard, honestly, between juggling studying, classes, homework, working out, and keeping in touch with my girlfriend (sorry babe!), but I manage. However, many students would prefer not to cram so many hard classes in one quarter as I have done so they may focus on the 3 or 4 regular classes they are taking and get good grades on them. I have given up that luxury because I do not want to spend a fifth year here trying to graduate. I want to finish in 4 or less. No, I am not saying I do not like it here in UCI (it's great), but I really, really want to get out there in the industry and find a job. Lately, however, 5 or 6 years before graduation is becoming the norm for most college and university students. Hit the jump for more.

Campus Safety

With the recent horrible incident that occurred in UCLA this week, the question of campus safety and security is surely to rise. Students should be entitled to a safe, secure campus while they strive for their education. However, there are many things out of our control and not every incident can be prevented. People are unpredictable and you never know when some angry or twisted individual is going to decide to grab a gun or a knife and hurt someone. It is important, therefore, for students to take responsibility in pre-planning for emergencies, no matter how small the risk may seem. Hit the jump for more.

UCLA Stabbing

Police closed off the UCLA campus today as a stabbing occurred on campus at around noon. According to the LA times and KTLA 5 news, the incident occurred in the UCLA Science Lab between 2 students; the victim being female and the suspect being male. According to witnesses, he punched her numerous times and then slashed her throat, and ran away from the scene. He later turned himself in and is under custody. This is horrible news and my condolences go out to the female student and her family. Hopefully, she makes it through.

The College Struggle

No doubt, the biggest struggle students will face during their College and University years onwards will be cash. Cash. Cash. Cash. Sure studying, graduating, passing, and all the other goals that fall into place during your college years are far more important, but none of them are possible without cash to pay for school (for better or for worse). There are a number of ways to get free cash as a student, but as many students already know, sometimes that is far from enough. Students have to get part time jobs on top of their full time schedules just to keep from going into debt. This makes the more important goal of actually studying and passing your classes that much harder, which should never fall second to making money. Some students may even do crazier things like participate in clinical studies or rob a kitten just to make some quick cash  Hit the jump for some small money making and saving tips, and help save a kitten.
